Our power together is many times our power separated.

Enjoy the Rainbow with an open heart and you Will see the Vision.

Join us for the July 4th Silent Contemplation & Prayer for Peace, respect those maintaining silence from dawn. Hold the silence until the arrival of the Children's Parade and all the children are in the center of our circle.

Click here for the some suggestions on what to bring. Remember the more you bring in the more you need to hike out and take home.

WE LOVE YOU!!!!

CONSENSUS:
Spring counsel for the 45th annual rainbow family of living light gathering of the tribes reached consensus by passing the feather in silence that we encourage individuals to gather at the Berry Field site.

***** DIRECTIONS *****

From all points South take Highway 7 from Manchester Vermont towards Danby, Vermont (north of Manchester, VT). Go 10 miles and turn right on Forest Road 10 (aka Brooklyn Rd) in Danby. Check the odometer and call this @0.0.  Hairpin turns and climbing. Big Branch Picnic Area @2.5. Appalachian trail @3.0. The site is 6 miles on your left. FS31 @ 6.2.

From Interstate 91 in Vermont
Take I-91 North to Exit 6 in Vermont. Take US-5 West towards Chester, Vermont (US-5 becomes or intersects 103 West - you want to end up on 103 West heading towards Chester).  Continue through Chester, Vermont where the road becomes VT-11 (was 103 West).  Drive approximately 14 miles. You will see a Clarks Grocer Store on the left down a small hill. Shortly after that turn right onto Landgrove Road. Drive 2.8 miles.  Landgrove Road will do a 90 degree turn to the left. Drive 1.8 miles past the turn you will see the Landgrove Inn on your right. Go approximately 1/4 miles past the Inn. Take a left turn onto Little Michigan Road. Drive approximately 1/4 mile and take a right hand turn on to Forest Road 10. Go 7 miles to site.

Alternate route from I-91 in Vermont
From points East (like Boston, Cape Cod, Berkshires, Maine, etc) via Interstate 91 in Vermont.
Make your way to Londonderry, Vermont using any map or GPS. Shop @ Clark's IGA which has BLOCK ICE (closes 9 PM)!  Take hwy 11 west a half mile.  Turn right on Landgrove and go 2.8 miles. At the fork follow Landgrove to the left for another 1.2 miles. Watch for Little Michigan Rd where you will go left for just .4 miles. Take a right on Forest Road 10 (brown forest servce sign).  Go 7 miles to the site.

NEW:   If you decide to take 30 North out of Brattleboro to get to Londonderry, VT, note that 30 North joins up with 100 North, just after the town of Townshend, and the road carries both names for a while. To get to Londonderry, you will need to take the 100 North when the two roads split apart, at the village of Rawsonville. Look for a Honeypie Restaurant and "Ski and Sport Shop" on your left- where you turn right onto 100 North.  100 North will take you to the Clark's IGA mentioned above.

From all points North
Take Highway 7 from Rutland, Vermont. Go 20 miles and take a left turn on Forest Road 10. The site is 6 miles on your left.

GPS: N 43.36087 W 72.90240
The 2 main trails start between FS 31 and FS 30 on FS 10 near Danby, VT. Walk north. FS 31 is gated and one of the main trails.

Parking is mostly on the road please pay attention to any for any forest service signs related to parking.   Keep in mind that we will be using a shuttle system for parking at some point and unless you're pulling in soon, you will be parking at a distance and hopping a shuttle or walking to the trailhead.

TIP!  In the early days, the USFS may change the parking rules multiple times and the parking that was legal when you put your car there may become illegal two days later. Stay plugged in to the parking rules on a daily basis for at least the next week or two if you want to avoid your car being ticketed to towed.

NEW INFO!    It seems that the Law Enforcement Officers (LEO's) are pretty regularly parked on the side of Forest Service Road 10, watching and pulling people over. They are set up "just past the last houses" and also between mile marker 3 and mile marker 3.5    Please make sure your car is legal and going within the allowed speed limit.

Please note there are Wilderness Areas near here and we want to stay out of the Wilderness Areas unless you're taking a hike.

Using Public Transit

Best place to get to if your busing, training, or flying is Albany, NY. We will be near Danby which is just off route seven about 75 miles north east of Albany, NY.

There is a bus which leaves the Albany, NY airport 7 days a week at 2:30 pm which travels up rte seven. The closest town where there is a stop is Manchester VT -- about 15 miles away from Danby. The price is $12.00 each way.  For more info, contact https://www.vttranslines.com/.

The nearest commercial airport is actually in Rutland, VT but it is really expensive to fly into that airport and the plane is a little puddle jumper

There is also a Yankee bus service which goes three times daily between Bennington, VT and downtown Albany. Bennington is about 40 miles south of Danby. The fare is $4. One would still have to get transportation from the airport to downtown Albany, NY.  There is city bus service to and from the airport.

A bus runs from Manchester to Rutland and from Rutland to Manchester and stops in Danby in both directions. Cost is $2. Driver will make unscheduled stops upon request, so you should be able ask the driver to stop at Forest Road 10 (aka Brooklyn Rd).  Click here for bus schedule.

Please check back before you hit the road or leave internet access as updates will be provided as I get them.  Generally the more information becomes available a few days after the initial directions are posted. I will put a note at the top of this post with the date/time updated.

Click here for a handy printable version of this information in PDF format.

Rumor has it that there is good shopping in Brattleboro Vermont of I-91 at the southern end of Vermont.

Tips for avoiding New York State toll roads:
How to get across New York state to the gathering without paying any tolls. Irom I 70 in Hagerstown, Maryland take I-81 north to Binghampton, NYI 88 northeast from Binghampton to Albany from Albany take NY rte 7 east which turns in Vermont Route 9 at the border. take a left when you get to Vermont Route 7 and head north to Danby, Vermont.

Misc. Info

Elevation is 600 meters or about 2000 feet.

Please keep compost pits covered.
For folks coming from the EAST, do your final shopping in Brattleboro, VT on I-91 just over the state line from Mass. It's a great town with a HUGE food co-op (feels like Whole Foods inside) and box stores. They like us … give them your business! If you can make it to Londonderry before 9 PM though, skip the ice in Brattleboro and buy the block ice at Clark's IGA in Londonderry. Clark's closes at 9 PM.

If you have questions about parking and shuttles, click here

Please copy and distribute freely. Ignore all rumors of cancellation.

  1. Appalachian train, not appletrain. Also, don't plan on getting too close to the site with your vehicle, perhaps that will be possible until the solstice, after that the nearest parking will likely be MILES away from the site. Plan ahead - you may need need to walk distances or ride on a shuttle with your gear - pack wisely.

    2. Are you implying that the shuttle bus parking area will be 5 miles away ? As stated in a few post ??

      Delete
    3. Yes, I would like more details as to where parking is in relation to the shuttle? Parking along the street? That is something I have never heard of before and doesn't sound all that safe, frankly.

      Delete
    4. Yes. If folks volunteer to run a shuttle, there will be shuttles from roadside parking to the site. This parking will be on a Forest Service (probably dirt) road and you will need to make sure all 4 wheels are off the road or you will probably get a ticket and/or towed. I'm not on site now so I can't give you specifics. You'll have to go on faith that it will all be working. I've heard rumor that bus village will be 5 miles away - but that's not confirmed at this time.

    1. Note: The northbound route has a scheduled stop at Brooklyn Rd., so no special stop should be necessary if going that direction.

  5. neither I86 or I88 in New York are toll roads which is how you can get from the Pennsylvania border to Vermont with out paying a toll. I90 and I87 are toll roads. It might be quicker going on I90, I87 and I287 once I88 ends in Schnechtony as you go across the Schnechtony/Albany area. However you can get to ny rte 7 by nontoll roads as well.

  8. You want to do something to change it. Pack your gear and get in the woods and tell people how to respect them. I pick up trash from day one to the day i leave. I inform people how to use crappers. Staying home is wear we are doing. We are coming home to the woods. You can't stop out but you can get involved. You are welcome as an advocate for the woods. Sure people disrespect.. But there's people like me.. Taught by my boyscout leader grandfather how to respect the woods. Who honor their ancestors. You sound bitter. Number you should get involved instead of couch complaining. Loving you.

  12. I hope y'all have a fun time and that people stay respectful..to eachother and to the property involved. VT is a really lovely place mostly because we keep it that way by being mindful. Don't turn it into a wasteland.. such as has happened after certain festivities..

  13. Ticks up here in VT are known carriers of lyme disease. Please be mindful and do a tick check every day. A tick needs to be attached for at least 36 hours to transmit the bacteria but they are tiny and easy to miss. A check a day can avoid a lifetime of suffering.

    1. Please speak for yourself! While YOU may welcome this ragtag group MANY Vermonters don't ! It's a joke this group "cares" so much for the earth and our environment, while everywhere they go they tear up the land, strew trash all over, clog the roads with their gas- driven cars (shouldn't they be walking so as not to pollute the air?) most local communities, anywhere in the states, hate when they come, and celebrate when they leave! Only the fringe people want them here, ask 99% of the local citizens. We'll just see how "softly" they use our, oh sorry, THEIR woods. Question - Will YOU be there after they leave cleaning up the mess?

    3. Regardless as to whether Rainbow walks gently on the earth or not, it isn't exactly the point. Rainbow is a place where many find acceptance in a world that doesn't provide it. That within itself is of value. You may value walking lightly upon. nature above a sense of communion and belonging, but not everyone else does.

And besides, even if you live in Vermont, you don't own Vermont. The earth, all of it, belongs to all of it's residents and as a collective (in this case Rainbow) people will choose to commune upon it as they deem fit.

      Delete
  15. Rainbow has a great clean up effort and long standing reports for after the gathering is done, while during the gathering the trash piles may seem overwhelming they are all sorted and recycled and removed properly. We're not just poor hippies doing a festival in the woods, we are a many people praying for world peace in the woods, we care very much for the land. There's a difference between Gatherings and festivals, all peaceful people are welcome, come join us on the 4th of July and experience the prayer, there are handi camp area for our elders who are not able to hike all the way in or need generator support and there is all types of camps and kitchens , from Jesus kitchen to kiddie village to granola funk theater to info, and so many others , all unique and doing Their "movie" , and my fav. Is getting together for main circle for dinner, which is served communal style , and food from all the different kitchen brought down to main circle to feed all. There's so much to see and so many people to meet, you'd be surprised by the help you can get by just asking a person you never knew - a mama was hiking down the trail with her kids and lots of gear, and a nice brother stopped and took her pack and helped hike her inn... is one if many examples , we are hear for each other! ! !
Clean up starts when you get there-
Cigarette buts go in your butt pocket not the ground
There are no ground scores , take it to info center
Cover your shit with ash and Lyme in the shitter

    We love you! Welcome home!!!

  16. If stealing a dog from the local Humane Society is any example of how your group operates, we can certainly live without you coming to OUR home! Yes, the woods are our home too, not just a gathering place for your "gathering." It should NOT be up to the local community up here to clean up your mess or police "your" grounds. All this costs taxpayers money. Money that could be used to REALLY help and nurture the environment, not clean up and police a bunch of nomads who profess so much love for the earth yet trash it at the same time. You can't have it both ways....you either value and care for the environment and natural resources or you treat it like your own personal playground and cram as many people as you can into a small area, depleting every natural resource the earth has to offer. And to further insult Mother Earth you ALLOW your brethren to scar, destroy, and trash the very environment you profess to value so much. Back to the dog theft, who the hell steals a dog from an agency that only wants to improve the animal's life? If these criminals from Maine wanted a dog, and was able to care for the dog in an APPROPRIATE manner, why not go through the proper adoption process and obtain the dog LEGALLY? It's actions like this that totally turn the local communities against your "peaceful" group and gathering. If you don't bother to vet your attendees how can you possibly assure any community you "invade" that you are no threat and will bring no harm and/or crime to an area? You can't ! Which is EXACTLY why every community DREADS hearing that your group will take over our lands, roadways, and towns. Wow, it's amazing how negative comments get deleted. Guess no one wants to really "hear" how the local community members REALLY feel. So much for open communication.

    1. Although I understand your concerns, in as far as dog theft, as for any community of thousands of people, you can't judge an entire society based on the actions of a few people.

    2. Not just the dog theft but the fact that the LEO's aren't allowing the locals up there now because it's too dangerous. We are not allowed to go on our own mountain, there are apparently road blocks now, because these hippies have attacked numerous locals in the last week who are just passing through to go home or to cruise the mountain road. Have some respect for OUR home.

    4. At most Gatherings, rumors fly that "locals aren't allowed" to go on site because of road blocks. The road blocks are simply the Law Enforcement Officers (unconstitutionally) stopping you on a public road and asking you what your business is. You can let them know you are enjoying the forest, or let them know that you are going to check out the Gathering. They might warn you away from us "dangerous people" but PLEASE KNOW that they have no right to stop you, and they will not actually stop you from going anywhere. They may give you their advice. But that is it.

Once you get into the Gathering you will see a village of happy, pleasant people playing guitar and cooking up good veggie food for free, for each other. You can see what it looks like in this short documentary.

I'm not going to lie, we've been having fun driving up through there and seeing what was going on! Mind you, I probably wouldn't stop, but we still have short conversations with people as we pass. I was bummed to hear we couldn't go up there. Duly noted though. If we're still allowed to go up there, I'm sure I'll be driving through again!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Shuttles are not guaranteed. People volunteer to drive shuttle - there will be times when shuttles will be far and few between and other times when they are frequent. This is all grass roots efforts.

    2. Please know too, that if you are travelling with a friend, you can usually drop your friend and all your gear at the trail head and then one person can wait with the stuff while the other person parks and walks back.

  18. If one has a handicapped placard will they be allowed to park closer in? I am disabled but have always wanted to check out a rainbow gathering and I live in Mass, this might be my chance. I need to be able to get to and from my vehicle during my stay and cannot walk long distances. Will this be possible?

    1. There is always an area called HANDICAMP that is as close in as possible, and is for the use of people with mobility issues only. As there is little to no meadow parking at this Gathering, and most to all of the parking is on the sides of the roads, I am not sure how they are handling it this year. But Handicamp is always a priority. At the very least, if you have a friend, when road parking is required, people often drop off their gear at the trail head, one person stays with the gear and the other person parks.

Folks are always kind enough to help carry stuff in with folks who are in need. Just call out. People help others carry stuff in all the time. It's very common.

    1. Shuttles are usually pick up trucks with people in the back, or a van that loads up as many can pile in. So yes, dogs are allowed. But understand that shuttles are random and not always running, and that they only take you to the trail head. After that you hike in. Rumor has it that it is a halfmile to a mile and half "hike in". No vehicles past the trail head.

  27. Actually the Rainbow Family has an EXCELLENT record when it comes to clean up. The Forest Service themselves will tell you that. Here is the clean up summary from 25 years ago, when the National Gathering was last in Vermont:

The operating plan and a Forest Service-prepared rehabilitation plan outlined agency expectations of the Rainbow Family in terms of clean up and site rehabilitation. The rehab plan (Appendix I) also identified areas needing immediate attention to help the Family prioritize their work. In addition, the plans established August 12, 1991 as the latest acceptable date for the work to be completed. Although the Family never condensed to the plans, there was an informal understanding that this goal would be met.

Beginning July 8, a core group of about 300 Family members began the clean up operations. They dealt with the piles of garbage; dismantled camp and kitchen structures and disposed of all construction materials; cleaned out and filled in fire pits; and filled in and covered over latrines and compost pits. They rebuilt rock walls; installed required water bars; and aerated, seeded and mulched compacted and/or eroding soils.

Crew members worked diligently. One Rainbow Family member assumed a leadership role and helped others stay focused and motivated.

The Forest Service worked closely with the clean up crew, visiting the site daily. They inspected the work on an incremental basis. As specific areas of the gathering site were cleaned up and rehabbed, Forest Service officials approved the work and relieved the Family of any further responsibility for that particular area. Slowly, sections of the site were "checked off". On August 5, district personnel conducted a final inspection of the gathering site. They found that the Rainbow Family had accomplished all clean up and site rehabilitation work that was expected of them. The final phase of the 1991 Rainbow Gathering was declared complete.

  28. If you are coming in on 100N through the village of Rawsonville the Shell Gas Station has just been opened as a restaurant - Honeypie. There is also a great coffee shop and craft beer shop across the street, as well as Fran's Kitchen who serves breakfast and killer Asian food.

  31. Wondering if there's more info on the actual parking situation now from on the ground? Also, if there are not shuttles running wondering how close you can get in to drop gear and how long of a hike it is in from there. Thanks xo, mama of 2
